The term Close the Gap is used by all governments for policies designed to reduce the disparity between First Nations people and the rest of the population, when considering the fundamental elements for a happy and healthy life.
Experts at the Productivity Commission monitor the education, health, security, employment, housing and life expectancy of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Where these outcomes between the two cultural groups are different, it is described as a gap.
The first Closing the Gap policy was launched in 2008 after campaigning from Indigenous health organisations and was agreed to by state, territory and federal governments.

The trends are analysed by various geographic, demographic and socioeconomic factors. The key factors associated with each target are identified by reviewing Australian and international literature, and by modelling target outcomes using a wide range of population, administrative and survey data. The implications of the findings are discussed in the context of existing policy and programs.
