The term Close the Gap is used by all governments for policies designed to reduce the disparity between First Nations people and the rest of the population, when considering the fundamental elements for a happy and healthy life.

Experts at the Productivity Commission monitor the education, health, security, employment, housing and life expectancy of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Where these outcomes between the two cultural groups are different, it is described as a gap.

The first Closing the Gap policy was launched in 2008 after campaigning from Indigenous health organisations and was agreed to by state, territory and federal governments.

What is in the National Agreement on Closing the Gap?

‘Close the Gap’ is a phrase you may have heard in discussions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and equality. But do you know how you can help to Close the Gap?

FIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO TO CLOSE THE GAP

For 25 years the Sea of Hands has been a symbol of solidarity with First Nations Peoples. Participants book a SoH visit for events such as National Close the Gap Day, Reconciliation Week, and NAIDOC Week.

Sea of Hands display - a symbol of solidarity

ANTAR has long advocated for governments to address health and other inequalities that disproportionately affect First Nations Peoples. There are systemic, entrenched and pervasive inequities that burden First Nations people and communities and impact life outcomes overall.

This report presents the current state and progress over time of 14 of 17 targets endorsed in the 2020 National Agreement on Closing the Gap. The trends are analysed by various geographic, demographic and socioeconomic factors. The key factors associated with each target are identified by reviewing Australian and international literature, and by modelling target outcomes using a wide range of population, administrative and survey data. The implications of the findings are discussed in the context of existing policy and programs.
