NAIDOC WEEK - A NATIONAL CELEBRATION FOR ALL

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.

The Art Gallery of Ballarat presents work by Peter Waples-Crowe set amongst the NAIDOC Banners of Alfed Deakin Place on Camp St.

A proud Ngarigo man living in Naarm/Melbourne, Waples-Crowe makes art about the intersection of his First Nations and LGBTQI+ identity.

First captured in European eyes by Eugene von Guerard’s 1868 painting, North-east view from the northern top of Mount Kosciusko, Ngarigo Country was transformed in the twentieth century by the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.

On top of a camp and humourous grab-bag of art history and archival video, Waples-Crowe inserts his own image as a counter to many decades of Aboriginal erasure from popular narratives of ski slopes and infrastructure.

Anniversary of the Australian Aboriginal Flag

On 9 July 1971, this flag was first flown in Adelaide at a land rights rally. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Island flag becoming official ' Australian flags | PM&C ' under the Flags Act 1953.

The black, red and yellow colours represent the Aboriginal people, the sun and the land respectively. Today, the Aboriginal flag flies proudly across Australia as a symbol of survival, cultural strength and the ongoing struggle for land rights, recognition and justice.

This year's Umbrella Lane NAIDOC Week installation is supported by Mid-West Tourism and Ballarat Council's Social Inclusion Team.

Nine-year-old Gem (Brewarrina 1st time actor Rhae-Kye Waites) forms a bond with a wild emu in the remote town of Brewarrina NSW.

"In nature, the male emu takes on the role of rearing the chicks. The human parallel to this emu trait is explored in this delicately beautiful feature debut...  At the moment of her greatest need for comfort, Gem encounters and forges a bond with a wild emu, the totem bird of her ancestors. While her connection with the bird gives her solace, it also leads to behaviours that bring Gem to the attention of Heidi (Georgia Blizzard), a new social worker in town." Significant Dates for Indigenous Australians in July

In July, we commemorate several significant events for Australia's First Nations peoples

July 1843 – Warrigal Creek Massacre, Gippsland

In July 1843, Angus McMillan and his Highland Brigade surrounded a group of Gunaikurnai people at Warrigal Creek, killing as many as 180 men, women and children purportedly in retaliation for the death of a shopkeeper.

The massacres at Warrigal Creek are a stark reminder of the violent dispossession of First Nations people in the early years of European colonisation. Within two decades, the thriving Gunaikurnai population was almost completely decimated. Today, efforts continue to ensure this dark chapter of our history is remembered within a context of truth, justice and reconciliation.

1 July – Coming of the Light Festival

Coming of the Light is a major celebration for Torres Strait Islander peoples, marking the arrival of Christianity in the Torres Strait in 1871 through the London Missionary Society. The festival is celebrated with church services, feasts and cultural gatherings.

For Torres Strait Islander communities, Coming of the Light represents not only the introduction of new beliefs but also the adaptation and resilience of their culture. It is a time for families and communities to come together in faith, culture and unity, blending Torres Strait Islander traditions with Christian practices.

1 July 1953 – David Gulpilil Born

David Dhalatnghu Gulpilil AM, one of Australia’s greatest actors and dancers, was born in Arnhem Land. His groundbreaking film and cultural career brought First Nations stories to national and international audiences.

6 July 2019 – Budj Bim Cultural Landscape Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, located in southwestern Victoria, was formally recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 6 July 2019. This extraordinary site showcases one of the world’s oldest known aquaculture systems, engineered by the Gunditjmara people over 6,600 years ago to trap and harvest eels.

Budj Bim is a powerful testament to the ingenuity, sustainability and enduring connection of Aboriginal Australians to Country. Its World Heritage listing acknowledges not only the technical sophistication of the aquaculture system but also the living cultural traditions of the Gunditjmara people, who continue to care for their ancestral homelands.

9 July – Anniversary of the Aboriginal Flag

On 9 July 1971, the Aboriginal flag was first flown in Adelaide at a land rights rally. Designed by Harold Thomas, the flag has become a powerful symbol of Aboriginal identity, pride and resistance.

Its black, red and yellow colours represent the Aboriginal people, the land and the sun, respectively. Today, the Aboriginal flag flies proudly across Australia as a symbol of survival, cultural strength and the ongoing struggle for land rights, recognition and justice.

7 July – 14 July 2025 – NAIDOC Week

Theme: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories and achievements. This year’s theme highlights the emerging generation of leaders who will continue the legacy of those who have fought tirelessly for justice and recognition.

14 July 1972 – Deborah Mailman Born

Deborah Mailman AM, acclaimed actor, singer and trailblazer, was born in Mount Isa, Queensland. A proud Bidjara and Māori woman, she has paved the way for greater representation of First Nations people in Australian film, television and theatre.

28 July – Albert Namatjira Born

Albert Namatjira, a pioneering Arrernte artist, revolutionised Australian art with his vivid watercolours of the Central Australian landscape. His success challenged colonial prejudices and helped open the door for future generations of Aboriginal artists.

30 July 2022 – Uncle Archie Roach Passed into the Dreaming

Uncle Archie Roach AM, beloved singer, songwriter and advocate for the Stolen Generations, passed away in July 2022. His music told powerful stories of loss, survival and healing, resonating deeply with Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians alike. His connection to Ballaarat mob and families here is significant and we acknowledge that a sense of both connection and loss of this special man continues.

Conclusion

July’s calendar of events in Indigenous Australian history serves as a reminder of both resilience and tragedy. From the brutal massacres at Warrigal Creek to the global recognition of Budj Bim’s ancient aquaculture systems and from the achievements of trailblazing Indigenous Australians like Albert Namatjira, David Gulpilil, Deborah Mailman and Uncle Archie Roach bless his soul, these moments reflect an enduring journey of cultural strength, survival and excellence.

As we celebrate NAIDOC Week and honour the legacy of remarkable First Nations leaders and artists, we reaffirm our commitment to listening to and uplifting the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, shaping a shared future grounded in truth, recognition and respect.

Feedback:

'a group of our children attended BADAC’s Community Day. They watched some traditional dancing, created some artwork and planted native plants, had the option of participating in face painting, sport activities and other recreational games. The children took the public bus and had the opportunity to practice road safety skills also. It was a wonderful celebration of NAIDOC Week. All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children at our Centre attended and one of them remarked as we entered BADAC, ‘That’s my flag!’ It was a wonderful way to celebrate and value her connection to BADAC and Aboriginal heritage. A new mum learnt to weave a Torres Strait Islander ball called a kai for her son.

Two hours went too fast and everyone commented how good it was to be at Perridak Arts.

There was suggestion that it would be great to have a regular First Nations women's weaving circle for women and girls.

NAIDOC Week photo opportunity location with  NAIDOC Week Flags flying behind the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

This outdoor exhibition is a critique on Australian colonisation. Ross sees Australian colonisation as ‘a car crash; in slow motion we watch the lack of regard and insensitivity– the long-drawn-out slide towards an inevitable crumpled heap.

Bold and experimental this is a fantastic exhibition to take a walk to in the CBD of Ballarat
