Perridak Arts is a proudly First Nations-ownedPAST EVENT and operated cultural space located on Wadawurrung Country in Ballarat. Dedicated to showcasing the creativity, stories, and cultural knowledge of First Nations artists from Ballarat and surrounding communities, Perridak Arts is an important part of the region’s growing arts and tourism landscape.
Owned and operated by the Ballarat & District Aboriginal Cooperative, it provides a welcoming space where culture, connection, and creativity come together.
Perridak Arts helps support First Nations artists and contributes to the continuation of storytelling, cultural practice, and community connection for future generations.
We acknowledge the Wadawurrung people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which Perridak Arts stands and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. We also acknowledge the wider Aboriginal community of Ballarat and honour their strength, survival, and ongoing connection to culture and Country.

The melting pot of goldrush multiculturalism birthed a vibrant musical culture. Songs were written, shared, adapted and changed. They told stories of hope and hardship, new chums, and the yearning for distant homelands. These songs have been passed down through time, gifting us deep insights into life on the Victorian goldfields.
Through a contemporary lens, local musicians Hap Hayward, Freya Josephine Hollick, and Phil and Trudy Edgeley revisited and reimagined these unsung musical gems. To complete the evening, each performer presented an original song drawing on folk storytelling themes of hope, hardship and the rebel spirit.

Hannah Brontë on Art Screen.
Brontë is a Wakka Wakka and Yaegel artist who creates video, textiles, fibre arts and text-based works about women’s empowerment and protest. Shot on the beaches of Kombumerri/Yugambeh country, Coolangatta, POWA WAVE captures the natural beauty of an ocean sunrise as experienced by two Queer lovers. For the artist, ‘being a woman in the surf, let alone a Queer woman, takes a sport so freeing and transcendent and makes it a radical act of defiance.’

Transporters are used to move between the theatres, partly outdoors as well as indoors. Short distances of walking are required.

Location: Shrine of Remembrance. World War II Forecourt, Birdwood Ave, Melb.
In the spirit of reconciliation, we remember and recognise the service, sacrifice, dedication and loyalty of all the First Peoples who have served for Australia, as well as those who are currently serving.
First Nations people have served in conflict and peacekeeping missions involving Australia for over a century. For many years, their service and sacrifice was not recognised or commemorated. In 2006, the late Aunty Dot Peters AM, a descendant of the Yorta Yorta and Yarra Yarra peoples, and Healesville RSL Sub-branch President Retired Flight Sergeant Asim (“Sam”) Halim held a remembrance service to recognise First Nations servicemen and women. That same year the Aboriginal flag was raised at the Shrine of Remembrance. The service is delivered in the spirit of self-determination by the Victorian Aboriginal Remembrance Committee in partnership with the Victorian Government. The annual service takes place during Reconciliation Week and gives Victorians the opportunity to pay their respects to First Nations service men and women, both past and currently serving.

On top of a camp and humourous grab-bag of art history and archival video, Waples-Crowe inserts his own image as a counter to many decades of Aboriginal erasure from popular narratives of ski slopes and infrastructure.

This seminar features Blair Gilson (Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation) and Dr Brad Farmilo (ARI) discussing the Wiyn Murrup cultural burning program on Wadawurrung Country. In a shared presentation they discuss cultural significance, monitoring, and collaboration. This was followed by a discussion with questions from the audience. This was a hybrid seminar held during Reconciliation Week 2024 - attended by more than 400 people.
By actively encouraging knowledge dissemination and discussion the ARI hope to raise awareness about key ecological issues and build opportunities for collaboration among partners.

HIT Productions is proud to be presenting this important Australian work in Ballarat.
It’s the summer of 1946, and the war is over. Aboriginal soldier Frank Doyle has spent years fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with troops from all over Australia, but when he steps onto the Brisbane wharf he finds some things haven’t changed.
Filled with hope and defiance, Frank sets up his own ballroom, The Sunshine Club, where everyone is invited to meet, mingle and sway the night away.
Queensland Theatre audiences first fell in love with The Sunshine Club in 1999. The First Nations artists behind it are now household names. Just when the world needs a beacon of hope, this glorious musical classic is here to leave you grinning and tapping your toes.

The Arthur Rylah Institute hosted a hybrid seminar Working together to understand the impacts of Cultural Burning 2024.
This seminar featured Blair Gilson (Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation) who shared his insights into the Cultural burning program on Wadawurrung Country and its cultural significance.
Dr Brad Farmilo (ARI) followed Blair to discuss the monitoring element of the project, and many of the learnings that have come out of this critical work.
